The printing and packaging markets in China face increasing commercial challenges as well as great opportunities. As orders and profits decrease, the costs of paper and other materials are rising, which can result in many businesses struggling to make meaningful progress within the market. However, Shanghai Shengtong Times Printing Co. Ltd., which purchased the first NOVAFLUTE inline laminator in China, has already seen production booming in the first half of the year. In a 300㎡ product display area, Shanghai Shengtong showcases many clients’ products and innovations. Book and publication clients include Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press, East China Normal University Publishing House and East China University of Science and Technology Publishing House. Packaging clients include Wahaha, Shuangwaiwai, Mong Tsai, Be & Cheery, Daily Nuts and ASD. 

“我们现在的主要业务还是来自于最初规划的两个事业部，一个是书刊事业部，一个是包装事业部，包装事业部主要是以微细瓦楞包装为主，2018年营业额超过2亿人民币。现在经济下行的压力比较大，但包装板块的业务从1月到7月总共增长了15.7%。”孔勤总经理介绍道，“未来，我们还将不断拓展业务范畴，加大包装板块的投资与研发，不断提升产品品质与服务，为用户创造更多价值。”

"The majority of our business comes from the two divisions that we planned initially; our book and packaging divisions. Our packaging solutions are mainly based on micro-flute corrugated packaging, with turnover exceeding 200 million CNY in 2018. Although we are facing a relatively large economic downturn now in China, our packaging division has increased sales by 15.7% from January to July this year," said GM Kong Qin. “In the future, we will continue to expand the scope of our business, increase our research and development investment in the packaging sector and improve product quality and service, to create more continuous value for our clients."

在上海盛通成立之初，其业务主要来自于出版传媒、高档出版物印刷、网络按需印刷等业务。“在公司成立之初，我们就建立了高档包装设计研发中心，通过技术升级和产业整合等手段快速实现了高度规模化，这为我们后期进入包装印刷市场奠定了很好的基础。”孔勤总经理讲述道。 

In the business' formative years, orders mainly came from the publishing sector, predominantly high-end publication printing and online on-demand printing. “At the beginning of the business, we established a high-end packaging R&D center, which quickly achieved a high degree of scalable growth through technology upgrades and industrial integration. This laid a solid foundation for us to enter the packaging and printing market later on.” Continued GM Kong Qin.

"We have been working with BOBST since 2014. In the very beginning, when planning our production facilities, we conducted detailed research of the machine market and found that NOVAFLUTE in-line litho-laminator is the most efficient and environmentally friendly machine of its kind. It not only represents the future of corrugated packaging, but also meets our production needs today – for us that is in sheet-fed offset printing. We purchased the first NOVAFLUTE in-line laminator in China, which brought us a new converting method for corrugated board. 工业4.0是大势所趋，那么在孔勤的眼里，这个“势”不仅体现在提高生产效率高之上，更在于人员管理之上。他如此分析道：“目前印刷厂员工的主力基本都是70后、80后，90后的员工特别少，尤其是95后的员工一般都吃不起苦，所以面对这样的情况，就需要采用工业4.0的设备减少劳动强度，改善工作环境，吸引更多的年轻人进入这个行业，而博斯特设备的高度自动化和智能化恰恰是此类设备的代表。”

Industry 4.0 is a general trend for manufacturing, but in GM Kong Qin’s opinion, this trend is not only reflected in the improvement of production efficiency, but also in personnel management. "At present, the majority of packaging operatives are born between 1980 and 1990. Many employees born after 1995 find it more difficult to adapt to the workshop environment. As a result, we use the automatic machine functions and reduced labor intensity to improve the working environment, with a goal of attracting more young people into the industry. The high level of automation and intelligence within the BOBST machine is representative of what we need," said GM Kong Qin.

"The maximum production speed of the NOVAFLUTE in-line laminator is 120m/min and 8000 sheets/hour, which has replaced the need for 3 sheet-to-sheet laminators and 2 single-facers. We have also reduced labor overheads from 15 to 3 people, allowing us to divert resources elsewhere. Our operators are amazed at our new production line, because of its automation and being so easy to operate. While further improving the quality of the paperboard, it also greatly reduces the weight of paper & paperboard we need to process, as well as the consumption of materials.
